A Note on Names

After reading this, I've been thinking about names. I like the idea of giving the kid a name related to my profession. Two possibilities are Random (he can go by Randy -- which I don't actually like) or Stochastic (he can by Stoke or something). If those don't work, I was thinking about picking a famous statistician or probabilist. I really like Markov (he can go by Mark) or Bernoulli (I think Noulli is good). Both are in my math family tree so there's at least some connection.

I guess Earl II is still in the running as well.

What does everyone think?

Markov, all the way.

If you name the kid Random, I'm going to call him George.

I am impressed that "Earl" is still in the running. Call me old fashioned, but not too many people these days are going that route. Your little guy should certainly be proud to be named after his father.

There's something to be said for unique names, as in the article you mentioned, but I don't see the two of you as flower-children types. With the fascination for turtles, you might consider Terrapin or Testudo, although I haven't known any male "Terry's" that I'm particularly fond of, and "Testy" Lawrence might be tricky.

Your advisor might be proud if you named him Michailidis. Now that would be a unique first name.

I hope you realize I'm just flaming the fire of creativity... I'm sure whatever name you decide on will be just right.

My favorite mathematician is definitely Galois because he was a young genius and he died in a duel, which makes him sort of a bad ass. I don't know what nickname someone named Galois could go by though, so I'm not sure if it's a good choice. Plus his first name was Evariste, which I hate. Reimann is a close second since I had to read his book to do my math homework. Interestingly, his first name was Bernhard, which is a close throwback to grandpa booms.

ps: I don't like randy too much either, even though I think Random is a cool name.
